NEW 3RD EDITION 2006

KELPIE  BASICS

A Practical Manual for Training Your Kelpie

By Mary & Stephen Bilson

4th printing 2006

Kelpie Basics BookThis is the new, 3rd edition and with a brand new name. Previously published as the Kelpie Beginners Manual, we have now made minor changes and due to feedback from customers, we changed the name to reflect that the book is not just for beginners but for everyone who owns a Kelpie.... from beginners to professional breeders.

We have worked on producing this detailed manual for many years. We have had over 25 years of training dogs with thousands of Kelpies and other dog breeds. This  experience has been put together to bring out this guide which should greatly help anyone who owns a Kelpie from raw beginners through to seasoned professionals. We have also used the questions and the  feedback we get from our customers.  This is a large book of over 100 A4 pages. It is designed  to be used mainly as a practical training manual.

It is not a book on doing stock work!

....  It is aimed at new Kelpie owners and anyone who is starting another Kelpie or has problems with an older Kelpie. The manual deals with everything from general training for a family dog, through to basic foundation work before beginning stock work. It includes everyday thing such as feeding, crating and bathing your dog through to personalities, understanding your dog and problem behaviours.

The book includes information on controlling puppies, doing obedience, puppy phases, socialising, trick training, retrieving, commands, toilet training, puppy types, Noonbarra Down lesson, nipping and chewing, children and Kelpies, exercise, dog pack mentality, fear, swimming, Kelpies with chooks, horses and cats, dog fighting, jumping and climbing, digging holes, chasing bicycles, separation anxiety, car travel and much more.

FAMOUS KELPIES

1870 to 1968

 By Stephen & Mary Bilson

Famous Kelpies BookYears of research have gone into this book on the famous Australian Working Kelpies from the past. We have sourced information from thousands of letters, diaries, newspaper reports and articles. We have also included passages from many interviews we conducted with legends of the Kelpie world such as Frank Scanlon, Tony Parsons, Jack Mills, Les Tarrant and others.

We have set out the book in a chronological order and each dog has their own section, sometimes a page, sometimes a few pages. This makes it a very easy book to read. It can be read dog-by-dog if you don’t want to read it cover-to-cover.

The book starts with Jack Gleeson’s terrific little bitch, ‘Kelpie’, and shows how the breed came into being. We look at the ‘Immortal’ Coil and his unsurpassed performance at the 1898 Sydney Sheepdog Trials. We get some insight into the renowned King & McLeod Stud, breeders like Frank Scanlon, Jack Goodfellow and the Tullys. Why was Scanlon’s Dell regarded as “the greatest brood bitch in history” ? Could today’s Kelpie owners handle a hard-headed dog like Porter’s Don ? Was the ‘Barb’ a separate breed ? Why did Les Tarrant consider Kalari Basil his best dog ever ? Is there Dingo in the breed ? Was ‘Johnny’ the greatest Australian Trial dog of all time ?

It is not just hard cold facts. Where possible we have included stories and anecdotes about the dogs and the owners,  to give a better understanding of how important these Kelpies were.

This book has the most up-to-date information on the historical aspects of the Kelpie breed and sets straight past inaccuracies such as the correct date of the famous Forbes Trial and the circumstances of Jack Gleeson’s death. Some of the information in this book, (often quotes from the owner’s themselves), has never been in print before and hopefully will help the reader to get a better understanding of these famous Kelpies and the times they lived in. The book also contains dozens of photos; some are quite historical and not seen by the general public before.

REVIEWS FOR 'FAMOUS KELPIES'

"I've finished Famous Kelpies and I just wanted to let you know that I loved it. It is a credit to you both that a book on so many different dogs was still able to read like a story! It all just flowed together so well and was at times hard to put down but could be picked up again and continued on with ease... I still think you could easily go to $39.95 delivered, no one could ever complain about paying that for a book with so much historical information. Thanks again and congratulations on the new book." - Greg McDonald & Noonbarra Matti

'THE AUSTRALIAN KELPIE'

By Mike Donelan

Small softcover book that was originally a collection of articles that Mike wrote for an Agricultural college. Mike Donelan ran the famous Bullenbong Working Kelpie Stud for many years and has been a Stockman, drover, horseman and Kelpie breeder and was well known throughout Australia. Unfortunately Mike passed away a few years ago.

This book was originally a series of articles for agricultural students. Then in 1972 it made into book form. It was later updated and reprinted in 1984. It has a huge number of topics covered included ‘Purebred and Cross-bred Kelpies, Colour preferences, Starting Kelpie training, Kelpies on Motorbikes, Showing your Kelpie Sheep, Teaching Stay- up - Kennel, Friendly and Shy Kelpies, Cheap dogs, Biting the head or grabbing, Backing Sheep, Drafting, Teaching Speak up and Walk in, Working Cattle, droving, Trials, problem Kelpies, Some Famous Kelpie Breeders, Evolution of the Kelpie, How to Choose Your dog, Training the pup, Breaking in, Breeding procedures, Commands and more

Mike Donelan & his family were involved in stock and Kelpies for many years and said to have been breeding Working Kelpies for nearly a Century. Mike’s grandfather, Edmund Naughton bred Working Kelpies on Wandook and Booligal sheep stations. He was friends with the famous Bill Prendergast and the Cudgee Kelpies of the period. Mike himself first stated working with Kelpies alongside his Uncle, at Windouran Sheep Station in 1943.

It discusses training, problems, looking after the Kelpie, some good breeders and Kelpies and lots of other interesting stuff on Kelpies. It is written primarily for the person on the land and looks at the Kelpie from that point of view.

“The Kelpie is one of the most intelligent, adaptable, tough and faithful dogs of many breeds on this Earth ... The Kelpie is just one of many animals evolved by Australians for Australian conditions. Like the Australian Stockhorse

This book gives history, fact and training information on the Kelpie.

“ Why not more on cattle work? The answer - I always try and start my young Kelpies on sheep first, and if this is not possible, I just adopt the same or similar methods to a cattle situation, but always take an old dog as well as the pup on cattle. It is much more satisfactory to start on a few sheep though, much more control, simpler to prevent problems before they arise.

“So many handlers create problem dogs - too much too soon. I don’t attend teenage doctors, nor engage teenage lawyers, yet so many handlers expect (demand) mature performance from teenage Kelpies. Too much pressure, too soon, too many commands, too many rush situations, too many bad training sites, too many distractions!”

“... Trainers and teachers make things happen - they make 99% of their own luck. Nearby we have a young bloke from the city who took up a block. Never trained a dog in his life. I convinced him and his wife to have a go. His wife did some extra chores to allow her husband an extra ¼ hour in the morning and a ¼ hour in the evenings, and got the kids to chase a few sheep into a training yard after school. With 2 lessons a day and a few phone calls and an instruction book, the bloke has a bloody good dog and saved $400 (badly needed). It can be done!”

“...Many correspondence especially from Victoria, have great difficulty in shaking off their ‘colour hangups’. Colour in a Kelpie means very little. Porters Don. one of the really great sires of the past, a Scanlon bred dog, was a cream Kelpie. ... I don’t wish to debate with show supporters where the ‘chocolate’ or black Kelpie is fashionable. I am a breeder and trainer of Working Kelpies...

“...I rarely work cattle with one Kelpie. One is too vulnerable and never work cattle in yards with dogs of any sort. It’s a sure way of upsetting cattle and getting kicked. Others do, and good luck to them but in a big cattle yard I use a horse, the dogs are tied up when we get to the yards.”

This is a down-to-Earth practical book on how to train and work with Working Kelpies. It does not feature the Show Kelpie breed. It has obviously been targeted at Stockmen.

'CALL OF THE HIGH COUNTRY'

By Tony Parsons

Written by Kelpie expert and breeder, Tony Parsons who has run the Karrawarra Kelpie Stud in Australia for more than 50 years. He bought his first Kelpie in 1944 and since then worked on sheep stations as a wool-classer. He was also employed for many years as an agricultural journalist. He knew all the great old Kelpie men such as Frank Scanlon, Paddy Noakes, Robert Kaleski, Les Tarrant etc. He has sold thousands of Kelpie to just about every part of Australia and around the world.

Tony is a world authority on the Kelpie and has written a number of text books as well as fiction. His book, ‘The Australian Kelpie’ often sells for around $200 now on the second hand market. He is a highly regarded author and his books have often been on the Australian ‘best sellers’ lists.

This is a great epic story of a struggling Australian family in the mountains and bush country in central NSW. David becomes a good horseman and is well known for running top class Kelpies. His dream is to win the biggest sheepdog trial in Australia, The Australian National, held in Canberra. But all is not going to plan. There are a number of problems when running a working property and these have a habit of always preventing him from realising that dream. This is a really good yarn and well written.

There is plenty in ‘Call of the High Country’, about Kelpies and it is written from a man who has owned, bred and loved Kelpies for half a century. The book takes you on an adventure and builds up the characters in such a way, that you develop a great care for them. The Kelpies are superb. They inspire you to such an extent that many readers have said, that if you don't own one when you begin the book, you'll probably want to buy one by the time you have finished it !

When this book was first published it was on the best sellers list for months. It got terrific reviews in newspapers, radio and TV. It has been suggested it is in the same league as 'The Thorn Birds' and 'The Horse Whisperer'. It has been many years since a book has bought to life the Australian bush country. It is the story of love, hardship and the power of a dream.

Softcover. 593 pages. Published 1999. These are brand new editions!

CUSTOMER BOOK REVIEW

"G'day. Have read Return To The High Country by Tony Parsons and just wanted to give you some info for your site. Return To The High Country returns us to the High Peaks Pastoral Country following the passing of David's father Andrew. It shows David's determination to build a rural empire that will secure his children's future, but like always things don't go according to plan, His children are not quite what he expected and he has other worries in that will not leave him be. Overall a brilliant sequel and I eagerly await a third instalment. (I hope) anyway thought this might be of some use to you.

Yours, P Walker

THE STOCKMEN

By Rachael Treasure

The epic tale by the author of 'Jillaroo'. If you love Kelpies, then you'll love reading 'the Stockmen'. This highly acclaimed book looks at the history of the Kelpie and Jack Gleeson, the stockman who owned the original pup in the 1800's, called 'Kelpie'. Famous landmarks in the Kelpie history such as Casterton and Ballarook Station are all here. This history is nicely blended with a modern day story of stockmen and life on the land.

Rosie writes for the local newspaper but she dreams of riding out over the wide plains of the family property and working on the land. Then tragedy strikes and as Rosie tries to put her life back together she begins to research the haunting true story of the 19th century stockman who risked his all for a tiny pup and a wild dream. Then Rosie meets her own stockman.

"I loved this honest and heartfelt tale of life on the land - it captures the very essence of being Australian." -Tania Kernaghan

Review for Kelpie Basics

I received Kelpie Basics the other day and have read it right through. I'm just writing to say how impressed I am with your book!

I grew up with a pair of German Shepherds, my last dog was a Kelpie cross, and my last bitch was a bitser ..  I'm no expert, but I've learnt a few things over the years about basic dog training. Yet you have opened up a completely new philosophy of dog training to me, that of giving the dog a choice, as opposed to just making them do a certain thing.

I realise now that I taught Buck a lot of things this way without realising it. But I'd never actually thought about it. Just the fantastic Noonbarra down/stay command has shown me a lot, and I realise that there are so many ways to teach my dog by giving him a choice, as you have shown in many of the other commands you detail in your book.

We had our first down/stay lesson the day I got the book. Of course, it took a while! Our 8 week old pup is a bold fellow, and willing already to challenge you somewhat. The next day we had two sessions, each one better than before. And in our session today it only took him a couple of minutes to do it, staying down for well over half an hour. In a few more days, if he's got it down fairly well, I'll try him with some minor distractions. I see how the down/stay command will be so beneficial in not only my Kelpie's training, but in his life in general, and will make a good basis for learning many other commands.

Of course, this is not the only good aspect of the book! I've learnt a lot about kelpies. As I mentioned on the phone, this is my first thoroughbred Working Kelpie, and with our last dogs having long happy lives, it's been about 17 years since I had a little puppy, although I have helped Mum train her dog, who is now about 5.

The book is informative and written well, easy to understand, and obviously written by people who love their dogs!

I just have to comment on one thing that puts a fantastic picture in my mind, and I'd love to see it. When you talk about training a litter of pups to stay out the back door. I can visualise all of them being swept outside, again and again. He he!

Thank you for such a wonderful piece of work.

 Joshua Duroux
