KELPIE BASICS - Training Book

This is a good time to purchase a puppy from us as we have had a few matings together and this means a number of puppies to choose from to ensure you get the best possible match.

All our Australian Working Kelpie puppies bred at the Noonbarra Stud get the very best in individual attention, handling, socialising and training. Important too are diet and health issues such as regular worming, vaccinations including coronavirus and veterinary examination of each pup. Most years we only breed a small number of puppies, usually around 20 to 30 pups, but sometimes less.  So bookings are important. We bred 25 pups in 2007 but hopefully a few more in 2008. We still like to keep it a small family run Stud.

Our family has been involved in breeding & training Kelpies for nearly 100 years and over many decades of breeding with three generations of our family, we have bred more than 1,000 Kelpie pups and this puts us in a unique position that very few breeders can lay claim to. Our Noonbarra Kelpie bloodlines are highly regarded throughout Australia and around the World and trace directly back to the great Kalari Basil and Kalari Joker (more than any other bloodline in Australia) and then further back to the very first great Kelpies of the 1800's. All our Kelpie puppies are guaranteed 100% to work. Please book ahead as there is often a waiting period to get one of our Noonbarra Kelpies. All our Kelpies are fully registered in the highest category with the Working Kelpie Council of Australia.

KELPIE PUPPY LITTER DUE

Noonbarra Max X Barclays Queen

Litter Born:  30th April 2008

We have two red (brown) and tan male pups available in this litter

Australian Working Kelpie pups: Noonbarra Max

This is a very nice mating. We'll be keeping a female pup ourselves. Both parents have fantastic temperaments and are very outgoing and friendly. Both are keen workers with exceptional stock ability and very versatile in stockyards and open paddock and both have a nice style about them.

We expect pups to be medium sized, clever dogs and very loyal natures. Not too tall or heavy boned. We expect very versatile workers with a high degree of inherited ability. We expect good concentration on stock. Judging by the parents, these dogs should have a great sense of play and fun. These dogs should be fast and agile as well so would be ideal for any of the family fun dog sports that are so popular now.

Noonbarra Max needs little introduction. He has been an exceptional breeder over the last few years and extremely popular with our customers. Some have returned again and again and only want pups by Noonbarra Max. He has produced superb pups from to more than two dozen different bitches and many of these such as Noonbarra Amy,  and Noonbarra Jessie II have been done multiple times with outstanding results. He is also the sire of Noonbarra Jackaroo.

He has a great temperament and is a very happy dog. He has a lovely soft nature, loves people, and is very easy to train. He can handle any job in the yards or paddock. Very nice backing ability and great style in the open paddock.

Max has been one of the easiest dogs to handle and train. He is very friendly and a great dog with children. If he wasn’t working he would have made a terrific pet for someone. He has an amazing amount of natural working ability. A lot like Noonbarra Megan, who he is closely related to. Wonderful eye and style in the paddock. Learns quickly, backing well in the yards. Works Cattle and sheep.

Max has terrific conformation & stamina to be able to run all day. As he is not too big, we often use him in our breeding program to help bring the size down in some of the females that are a bit too big, so that we get nice medium sized Kelpies.

Barclays Queen

Barclays Queen is an outgoing, tall, dark red & tan female with a wonderful temperament and personality. She is very faithful, happy, playful and friendly. She is also extremely agile and fast. Her and Noonbarra Megan would be on par for agility, so this litter would be worthwhile looking at for things like dog sports. On stock, she has good power and force on the tail end when needed, combined with a good amount of style. She responds well and is quick to learn. She is quite tall for a female but we expect the combination with Max to produce more medium sizes. She is still a very young bitch and her training is ongoing.

The combination of Max and Queen should give good looking pups with wonderful temperaments, good with kids, versatile workers. Happy, friendly outgoing dogs suitable for family companions, dog sports, yard trials and most farm work.

KELPIE PUPPY LITTER DUE

Noonbarra Jackaroo X Noonbarra Meg II

Puppies Due: 16th June 2008

This is a good time to purchase a puppy from us as we have had a few matings together and this means plenty of puppies to choose from.

This mating is one of our customer's favourites and it has been done a number of times in the past. A good proven litter! We expect all Red (Brown) and Tans in this litter.

In the past, these pups have gone to all walks of life. Many have become wonderful family pets, others have gone to general farms or to sheep stations or to do cattle work, hobby farms, Agility, Obedience competition and other dog sports. We have Noonbarra Bindi II from a previous litter ourselves and she is a lovely dog. We could breed Meg to other males such as Noonbarra Mick II and get good pups but if something is working this well, then we thought why change it.

We expect pups to have good natures and be fairly calm dogs after maturity but still quite active as pups. A good level of agility, plenty of brains and responsive to training.

We had Noonbarra Boris II (Jackaroo X Meg) here recently for ten days of training and he was one of nicest dogs we have ever worked with. Soft, gentle natured but liked to play and have fun too. He was being trained for Yard Dog Trial work and progressed very well over just one week. We also just recently did a week's training on Noonbarra Katie II. (A full sister)

Noonbarra Meg is a medium sized Kelpie and easy going most of the time. Her work on sheep is very good and we call her a quiet achiever because she doesn't do anything really flash but just quietly gets the job done with no fuss.

Meg is a good dog in the stockyards or the paddock. She is nice on big mobs and has the versatility to handle small groups of sheep as well. She is often just in the right place at the right time. A very pleasant dog to work with and a dog that doesn't cause stress with the stock or the owner.

She has never had a lot of training and virtually taught herself to work sheep. She had no work at all for all of 2007 and the first 4 months of 2008 due to Stephen fighting cancer but last week had a session on sheep and it was like she had never been off them.

Because they are happy, outgoing dogs and have that well known Noonbarra loyalty to their owners, they are often bought as companion dogs and especially for dog sports.

Meg is one of our best natured young bitches. She is the result of careful linebreeding to many of our best dogs. She is friendly and outgoing . She is currently the only Kelpie we have in the Stud who is by our great old sire, Noonbarra Flash.

She is a nice combination of both parents [Flash and Penny]. We especially like her temperament and friendly attitude. She is a very easy dog to handle and train.

Meg makes a lovely companion dog and is often with us when travelling or just lying at our feet in the house when we are watching TV. She has a gentle nature and is a kind dog.

She has had four previous litters and the pups have been wonderful. Some comments from customers with her pups include;

"He is so sweet and gentle, he loves to smuggle in and have a cuddle ... His temperament is perfect for us, he is always happy to just be with you what ever is happening. If there is not game going on he is happy to just sit at your feet." Noonbarra Cobber

"He is a lovely dog.  He is very smart, I did the down training you recommended twice this morning and then went out with him.  When we got back I wanted him to sleep again, and said down from a meter or two away and down he went.  A bit of a chew on the blanket and asleep!  Amazing." Noonbarra Tiger

"He has fitted into the household wonderfully. We couldn’t image life with out him. Bob is a great thinking dog; his training is coming along lovely. Hannah and Jack just adore him and have been wonderful. To my surprise they have willing helped in all areas of Bob life. He is working well for both of them walking on a loose lead, sitting, dropping, standing, recall, a round’s and outs, ready - set –go, Loves going through tunnels for them." : Noonbarra Bob II

_______________

Noonbarra Jackaroo is an outstanding sire who will be used more and more in the future. Like his dad, Noonbarra Max, he has a lovely temperament. He is one of our calmest sires and very easy to work with. He travels very well in a vehicle and this is an important consideration for many of our customers. He is Stephen's main companion dog at present. He is quiet and gentle natured and very easy going. He likes people and loves a pat.

Like most Noonbarra Kelpies, he works both yard and paddock. He has great footwork and anticipates what the sheep are going to do. He is very keen and keeps his concentration.  Wonderful holding ability and balance. In the stockyards he has excellent backing skills. His natural (untrained) ability on livestock was showing well when he was just a pup, a few months old and he carries on this great natural ability from his sire. This is the type of Kelpie we are trying to breed more and more of and the type of dog we like.

He has produced exceptional pups to so many of our bitches over the past couple of years including; Noonbarra Kellie, Noonbarra Sue, Noonbarra Becky III and of course Noonbarra Meg II. He has also been mated recently to Kamileroy Queen.

Jackaroo is very often a house dog and very well behaved. He is good when we take him into town and is good at meeting people and fine with traffic noise etc. We often sit at outside cafes with him and able to have a leisurely coffee while he lays at our feet.

We expect these pups to be very friendly and happy, outgoing fun types. They will mature into very gentle, intelligent adults with a strong sense of devotion to their owners and make great companions. With maturity and training, their work should be calm and quiet, very little stress on the stock and at the highest level in both the yards and the paddock. We expect fairly early starters.

Prices for these Kelpie pups at 8 weeks will be $850.
(Add $200 for international orders - See overseas info).

KELPIE PUPPY LITTER DUE

Noonbarra Jackaroo X Kamileroy Queen

Puppies Due: 19th June 2008

Due to Queen being Black & Tan and her parents similar, we expect all litter to be black & tan with a very slight possibility of a red & tan.

Kamileroy Queen is on lease to us especially for this mating. A female will be kept by us and a male will be going to Robert Cox of the Karrobar Stud. We have tried to purchase Queen on a few occasions because we think so highly of her, but she is not for sale.

This litter is very exciting and should produce outstanding working dogs in every sense. If you are looking for top level work for a sheep station then you can't go past this mating.

Kamileroy Queen is one of the best working bitches we have seen in recent years and Noonbarra Jackaroo is one of our most talented males. Both parents have great temperaments and are faithful types of dogs.

Queen is a gentle Kelpie but she has plenty of power on stock when it is needed. We have seen her work well out in the paddock as well as in close with stockyard work. She takes command well and can be very precise. Good natured and obedient. She is a fairly big bitch but Jackaroo is medium sized and only about an inch taller than Noonbarra Max so that should bring the size down to a more medium type of Kelpie.

KAMILEROY QUEEN

Jackaroo is special too. He has a lot of the old -time anticipation and footwork you rarly see in Kelpies today. He likes to please and is a terrific companion dog. He has always shown an outstanding amount of natural ability and when he was just a few months old, with no training whatsoever, he was working sheep through a whole yard system and backing and coming through them. It was something to watch!

He is an absolute joy to own. A dog who is faithful, easy to train, friendly, wants to please and very intelligent. He travels well, adapts to new situations easily. Jackaroo is a very easy going and calm Kelpie.

Noonbarra Jackaroo has produced very impressive pups litter after litter and we will be using much more as a sire in future. He is a wonderful combination of Noonbarra Max, a little of Noonbarra Dusty and Sarah and quite a bit of old Noonbarra Gabe coming in. He also has a number of very famous Kelpies in his background such as Capree Cobb and Capree Boss II. Boss has won nearly every major event in the country. There is also the legendary Liscannor Pace, one of the biggest winners of Arena and Utility Trials in Australia who won dog of the year on many occasions. Then there is Rockybar Buff, Glenlogie Lucky, Barambogie Mack, Capree Watch, Chondo Doll, Kalari joker and Basil too. All these dogs are featured in our books on 'Famous Kelpies' and 'Kelpie Legends'. The mating to Queen brings in greats such as Karrobar Moss, Phils Creek Nap, Scoriochre Gunga Karrobar Gin etc.

Noonbarra Jackaroo can be seen on the last edition of our Noonbarra stud DVD.

Prices for these Kelpie pups at 8 weeks will be $850. (Add $200 for international orders - See overseas info).

Kelpie Price include all vaccinations against serious dog diseases including Coronus Virus, Regular worming, Veterinary checks, Pedigree Certificate, Registration in WKC National Stud Book for Purebred Working Kelpies, Special Stud registered Kelpie tattoo, Dog folder with photos of parents, grandparents, training information and Kelpie care information as well as after sales advice.

UPDATED INFO ON STEPHEN'S CANCER TREATMENT

Thank you to the overwhelming number of friends and Kelpie customers who have contacted us during this trying time and sent good wishes. We very much appreciate all the support. Stephen is recovering well but it will take all of 2008 to make a good recovery. He is in good spirits and very positive. He has been pleasantly surprised by the large number of cards, letters and gifts sent by past Noonbarra customers. They have helped a lot.

Stephen has been through radiation and chemotherapy and two major operations as well as an ileostomy. He came out of hospital at the end of November and now has a slow recovery which doctors say will take about 18 months. The doctors are very pleased by his progress so far. He finished his last course of chemotherapy in mid March and should be getting his energy levels back in the next couple of months. His blood results have been good.

The doctors  now give  him an excellent chance of survival. On the 22nd of April 2008, the CT scans have given an all-clear which is the best news we could have hoped for. There is still a long way to go and there is still a reasonable chance of it coming back within the next year, so he has to continually undergo a number of tests and examinations including colonoscopies, blood tests, CT scans etc.

We have had a lot of good practical support here from the local community and Erin from the Spinifex Kelpie Stud looked after some of our dogs through this period. We are very grateful to her.  John Salter has also come in to feed and water the dogs. This has taken a lot of pressure off us. We have had numerous offers of help from so many people and it has been very heart warming.

At one stage we considered closing the Kelpie Stud and retiring from Kelpies when Stephen got sick but we love working with the dogs too much so have decided to keep going. Stephen gets a great deal of enjoyment being around the dogs and missed them enormously when he was in Sydney. We have now organised ourselves for a good year with the dogs in 2008!

We will be going to the big Kelpie Festival at Casterton in Victoria, in June and hope to meet a lot of our customers there. This is a big step as it will be Stephen's first overnight trip since his operations, so we are very much looking forward to it.

Thank you to everyone!
